For I am the
undisputed world champion at catching the mongrels of the sea
Sigh . . .
Wednesday 21st February 2007 - Back into it !
Back at my favourite beach as things
felt very promising tonight. Absolutely pitch black dark (no moon or
had already set). The stars were burning brightly above, and the
night was briefly illuminated by falling stars. It was beautiful.
The Nor'easter died to a mere puff by 9pm, the sea & swell has been a tiny
.5m and the water has been fairly reasonable in temperature lately.
The high tide was forecast for 12.33 pm, and fairy reasonable for this
part of the world at 1.69m. The tide slowly fell, and more
whitewater started to flow across my gutter.
My mate John dropped into work for a chat & a coffee around lunchtime.
He'd been out fishing in the lake chasing a legendary school of yellowtail
kingfish he'd heard about, and managed a just legal tailor. Being
the top bloke that he is, he kept it specially for me to use as jewie
bait. I reckon that someone out there is having a good laugh about
the kings in the lake - while I'm sure that they turn up from time to
time, it's funny how you never see photos to accompany the stories.
The high tide was fairly late tonight, so it was a bit of a commitment to
chase jewies - I have to work in the morning. So it was a pretty
brief session. I fished 11pm - 1.30 am, and had the whole damn beach
to myself until 1am, when Pete the hardcore jewie addict arrived. He
had that feeling too - I wouldn't be at all surprised if he catches at
least a schoolie tonight.
My baits were the head & shoulders of Johnno's tailor, rigged with two x
10/O's and 50 lb fluorocarbon trace, and a just legal sand whiting with
two x 7/O's and 50 lb trace. The tailor was bumped and played with
for nearly ten minutes before I lost patience and sank one of the 10/O's
into the dinnerplate sized sting ray. I took it as a good sign, and
got the bait straight back out there. After 45 mins, assorted bumps
and runs from pickers (read bream) had left the tailor a bit worse for
wear. So I changed it to the whiting. Something had chewed out
the gut cavity, like a slice of watermelon that someone has taken a series
of bites out of. Frigging stinking damn Bream. Rotten pickers.
It was 1.30 am, and that was the final straw. Time to hit the hay -
work tomorrow.
