I had experienced this canyon about
twelve years ago with Brendan Berghout and Trisha Truelove (yes, her real
name). I have wonderful memories from that it - and on this trip it
was even better than I had remembered.
I chose Bruce, and a couple of team mates from footy to come along as they are all hardcore
fitness fanatics and outdoor adventurers, but were canyoning novices.
I couldn't have chosen a better canyon and better people to come along.
A hint is to use the 1:25,000 topo's of the area to make your way to the
Galah Mountain turnoff - the state forests map of the area is badly
wrong. And don't take a one week old new car. Hey, really
sorry about that guys, but it had been
twelve years OK!
The walking track into the canyon is well marked and is the hardest part
of the whole day. There are no abseils, and the canyon is clean,
dark, very cold and beautiful. We reversed the canyon to get out,
but there are several other ways if you are really keen. There were
glow worms in a little tunnel section, and masses of blue spiny yabbies
throughout the canyon. They love eating tiny chunks of Powerbar as much as
we do.
As I said above, the hardest part is the walking track - especially the
walk out. As long as you are fit, you won't have much trouble.
We are all pretty competitive and decided to have a race back to the car.
If you are not fit you will see why you should be if you do this canyon.
